The Minister for Gender, Labour and social development Betty
Ongom Amongi has paid a visit to alur kingdom in a bid to
assertain how the 60 million given by government to kingdom is
being used.
Speaking during a meeting with the kingdom officials recently
the Minister noted that they used to give 5 million shillings to
the kings as their monthly salaries but they realized that that
money was not enough.
She said that starting last financial year, they decided to
increase the money to 60 million monthly of which 15 million is
to cater the salary of the king, and the remaining 45 million is
to be used in preserving good cultural practices in the kingdom.
“Cultural institutions are very important, and they are to be
supported since they are at the grassroot and the first contact
for the people” she said
The Prime Minister Alur Kingdom Prince Lawrence Angela said that
with the financial help they are receiving from government, they are
promoting and preserving cultural heritage, promoting cultural
and modern health through combating HIV/ AIDS among others.
He said that they are also supporting government programs like
Parish Development Model (PDM) by interfacing with communities
through the chiefs.
Meanwhile Robert Abak the Resident District Commissioner, Nebbi
appreciated government for allowing cultural institutions to be
functional because they helped a lot in maintaining the peace
and tranquility being enjoyed in the country.
He said that they have been working with the team closely to see
there is peaceful coexistence in order for government programs
to succeed.
